A work of austere elegance and archaic beauty revealing a deep understanding of the Greek humanistic tradition, Mother and child relies on balanced volumes, tight focus on the essential, concentration on the typical and generalized treatment of form to convey a distant memory and a modern interpretation of a timeless ancient core. Executed after 1950 when Pappas returned from Egypt to Athens, this evocative piece belongs to his finest period, during which he established himself as a talented artist worthily carrying on the legacy of the great 19th c. Greek sculptors.1 “His lines are frugal, his volumes are well designed for the rhythmic interplay of light and shadow and his compositions are intended to aesthetically please the eye with a fine balance of lines and volumes rather than stir emotions with violent contrasts and abruptly transposed planes.”2
