Bonhams “The Greek Sale” 14 Dec 2004 London

After completing her studies at the School of Fine Arts in Athens, the artist continued her training in Vienna and later in Munich. Influenced by German Expressionism, her sense of colour and composition remained strong throughout her career. Best known for her landscapes and portraits, she was one of the very few women to exhibit with the “Omada Technis” (“Art Group”) between 1930 and 1940. She also participated in the Biennale of Venice in 1934.

In the present picture, the horizontal bands of the red carpet, the black volumes of the piano, the white keyboard and the neutral wall are offset by the striking pose of the standing woman. The artist has taken a non-traditional approach in this portrait by placing the woman off centre and including as much of the piano as possible without, however, allowing it to be the focal point.
