M. Fehr, Vlassis Caniaris, Konkreter Realismus, Skizze einer Künstlerischen Strategie Werkverzeichnis 1952 bis 1983, Verlag für moderne Kunst, Nürnberg 1991 (illustrated p. 189 fig. 58/71)

Gestural energy, inner glow, fluid lines, hybrid forms and sensitive colours characterize this pioneering painting by the committed avant-garde artist Vlassis Caniaris. “In 1958 I created a group of works in which, through colour and shape, I sought to convey - if not actually describe - dreamlike images from my early adolescence.”1 Many works from Caniaris’ Garden of my Childhood series were presented in his historic first solo exhibition at the Zygos Gallery in Athens in 1958, providing the spark for a heated discussion on abstract art, still a novelty in Greece at the time. Drawing from surrealist automatism and biomorphic abstraction, while making an early contribution to abstract expressionism and “art informel”, this unprecedented showing of non-objective art provoked intense reactions that have remained legendary.
