Flight and travel as a means of escaping everyday reality were themes that preoccupied Akrithakis throughout his artistic career. In his paintings and wooden constructions these themes were expressed through the recurrent motifs of aeroplanes, arrows, clouds and suitcases. Poetic and spontaneous, his works are small narratives that relate personal feelings and make his dreams more tangible.

Always rebellious, the young Akrithakis went to Paris in 1956 where he befriended intellectuals and artists alike. In 1968 he won a scholarship to study in Berlin. The cultural life of the city, which would be his home until 1984, offered him many opportunities to gain international recognition.

The present work, executed in 1983, only a year before he left Berlin to settle permanently in Athens, conveys the desire for journeys beyond space and time, to the unknown, perhaps to a land that existed only in the artist’s imagination. Borrowing from arte povera and neo-Dadaism and using common materials – pieces of scrap wood and small lights – Akrithakis has constructed a playful work, which suggests not only the idea of flight but also the ravages of time, finally achieving a poetic result. In speaking about these works, he referred to them as “landscape(s) of evening poetry” (quoted in Maria Kotzamanis, ed. Akrithakis, Athens 1997, p. 296).
