Footnotes
In this evocative piece of austere beauty, the simplified elaboration of fluid and balanced volumes, the tight focus on the essential and the ingenious combination of square and curvilinear motifs show an artist in full control of his expressive means. A prominent sculptor who remained faithful to figurative art throughout his long career, Yannis Pappas had the opportunity to closely study Egyptian art during his stay in Egypt in 1944-1950. "In its formal austerity, schematization and tectonic design, concentration on the typical and generalized treatment of form, Egyptian woman conveys something of the timelessness of Egyptian sculpture."1 However, as noted by Manolis Chatzidakis "From this lofty lesson in monumental style, Pappas did not retain any external characteristics but, remaining true to his line and Greek memory, he simplified his formal vocabulary in order to enrich his expressive language."2
