Bonhams “The Greek Sale” 24 May 2005 London

A prolific artist, Kontoglou was a major activist for the revival of Byzantine and folk art pictorial traditions in Greece. His style remained faithful to a Byzantine aesthetic of a limited space and stylized figures, as in this portrait. The red frame around the work is a typical feature of many Byzantine icons, but the naturalistic depiction of the woman wearing her jewellery and the earthy colours recall the portraits of Fayuum.
