When he completed his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Athens, Regos left for Paris in 1930, where he enrolled at the Grande Chaumière and Colarossi and came into contact with current art movements. Five years later he returned to Greece and settled in Thessaloniki.

Regos travelled extensively throughout Greece and, subsequently, the Greek landscape became one of his favourite subjects. He made frequent trips to Mt. Athos, even publishing a book of engravings in 1934. The present painting dates from 1979 and reflects the intensity inherent in Regos’ mature work. Perched on a rocky cliff above the sea, the compact and attractive Moni Grigoriou, founded in the late 14th century, occupies the centre of the composition. Regos relies on colour to emphasise the sublime majesty of the natural formations of the rocky slopes and the softly undulating surface of the sea.
