Dimitris Kossos was born in Tripoli in 1817. He died in Athens in 1872.

Following a period close to his father in the naval port of Poros, is registered student at University. In 1846, 1847 and 1848 involved in the exhibitions of students of the University. In 1849, he entered the Academy of Munich receiving a scholarship from the Government. He lived for ten years in Paris, where he opened a workshop. In 1863 most likely (or 1864) returned to Greece. In 1865 he was appointed Professor of Plastic and Artistic industry in the University, a position he held until 1868.

He is called as "the premier of the artists of modern Greece".
