John Kefallinos (1894-1957) was born in Alexandria.
Brilliant student, with performance in mathematics, he discovered his artistic flair and studied art history and painting in France, where he lived for several years.
He returned to Greece in 1930, to elect as a professor in the School of Fine Arts one year later, and organizes the Lab of Engraving. He also cooperated with the Greek Post (1950-1954) illustrated stamps which won international awards.
Never been keen to highlight his work, thus justifying the description "the Silent", which gave the P. Prevelakis in his obituary. Only two complete work, he agreed to submit to the public: "The Peacock" ( 1946 ) and "Ten white lekythoi" (1956).
The relationship between Kefallenos and his students was never formally: he was interested and looked after like a father. His innate goodness and sense of solidarity and justice prompted him to defend the weak and peace.
In 1954 he was elected as a Director of Fine Arts, a position he would maintain until his death. Under his leadership, the school will be interested and take a stand on issues of culture, freedom or human rights.
