BIOGRAPHY

He was born in Zakynthos, in 1806 and died in Athens, in 1877.

He took the first courses in painting from his compatriot, Nicolas Kantounis. He continued his studies in Rome (Academy of St. Luke) and Florence. He settled in Florence for 12 years, copying paintings of famous painters for financial reasons.

On his return to Zakynthos worked on painting churches. In 1858, he was appointed master of design in the Ionian Academy, where he remained until 1864. In 1870, he received a bronze award in the Zappeion Exhibition for his work "Christ on the Cross". In 1875, he was awarded a silver "nomismatosimo" for copies of various artists.

His portraits are the most characteristic illustrations of civil society in the Ionian Islands in the 19th century.
