BIOGRAPHY

He studied sculpture at the School of Arts, close to L. Drosi in 1869-1872. In 1873 he took scholarship from the Holy Institution Evangelistria Tinos for Munich, where he studied at the Academy close to M.R von Widnmann. In 1874 he wins the first reward in the Academy for his work entitled “Fairy tale of Beauty”. The same year he was rewarded with the golden medal for his work “the Satyr that plays with Love”. He founded in Athens his own laboratory. Until 1888 it appears that he lived in Tinos, where the situation got worse and he was closed in the Psychiatric clinic. In 1927 he was awarded Trophy of Arts by Athens Academy. In 1928 an exhibition with drawings and sculptures was presented in the “Asylum of Art” of N. Velou. His work is separated from many scholars in three periods that are characterized by the critical turning-points of his life. First period (1870-1878) covers his juvenile years till the appearance of his illness. The second one (1902-1930) covers the years he lived and worked in Tinos after his return from the Psychiatric clinic. Third period (1930) is identified with the season when he lived and created in Athens. He have created significant works as the “Fairy tale of Beauty II, Alexander the Great alive and dead, Aphrodite and peasant, Oedipus and Antigone as well as others inspired from the ancient Greek history.
