BIOGRAPHY

Argyros was one of the last represenatitives of the “Munich School”. His parents came from Nigrita but he was born in Kavala. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Athens under Nikiforos Lytras. He graduated with top honors in 1904. In 1929 he was appointed professor at the School of Fine Arts in Athens and later he served as its vice-director and thrice as its director.  Many great Greek artists like the paintes Fotis Zachariou, Giorgos Manousakis,Yiannis Moralis and Yiannis Spiropoulos, the engraver Telemachos Kanthos and the sculptor  Christos Kapralos were his students. During the Greek-Italian war (1940-41) he was asked by the Metaxa government, along with thw sculptor Fokion Rok, to go to the front an official illustrator. In this capacity he created thirty-two paintings related to those epic events. These painting are a treasured possession of the Athens War Museum. In 1952 he was awarded the “Excellence in Fine Arts” distinction by the Athens Academy.  In 1959 the Acadwmy accepted him as a permanent member. He died in Athens in 1963.
