Tempera
The technique by which the pigment is mixed with another material, -usually yolk of egg- in order to bind, is diluted with water, and is spreaded to a layer of plaster (Geshe). As a result, we have an opaque, durable and fast drying paint that becomes softer when it is dry. Till the 15th century, the tempera dominated in the painting onto plank. In the period between the 14th and the 16th century, it was also widely used as a mixed technique which was based on the "transition" of the tempera of an oil layer. This mixed technique was the forerunner of the oil painting. In the 20th century, there was a tendency to revive and reuse of the tempera.
