Symbolism
Movement in European art and literature (1885-1910). Main principle was the rejection of display and point of "objectivity" and the adoption of the opinion that art should "submit" the ideas with symbols. The rise of subjectivity and the interest in religious mysticism on the one hand, and the erotic and decadent element in the other hand were the key features. Odilon Redon, Gustave Moreau, Pierre Cécile Puvis de France, Ferdinand Hodler in Switzerland, Gustav Klimt in Austria, G. Turop in Holland, Giovanni Segantini in Italy etc. were some of the best known painters of Symbolism.
