Sketch
Usually a brisk sketch by which the artist tries to get a feel for how it will be a future artwork. In some cases, however, for example that of Constable, the sketches have a spontaneity and an immediacy which is missing from the final works. In large configurations of Rubens, only the original sketch was his, while the rest of the work was done by students.
