Salon
Initially, a group of friends, more or less constant in its composition, who meet in regular periods in a house. The institution of the Salon began in France of the 17th century and has since played an important role in literary and artistic life of the country. In particular as regards the visual arts, members of the French Royal Academy exhibited since 17th century their works in the Salon of Apollo in Louvre. The report was made biennial since 1737 and later annual. In 1863, organized the Salon of Rejected, was the only annual exhibition of paintings and sculpture, and its committee (who constituted by almost exclusively members of the Institute) has the discretion to reject any artist who did not approve. Although in 1881, Salon was reorganized (under the name of French Artists Society and the committee no longer be elected by the exhibitors of last year), however, always remains a stronghold of traditional art and art conservation.
