A major school of Italian painting. The foundation is placed in the mid 15th and late 19th century. Both Michelangelo and Raphael worked in the early 16th century in Rome, contributing to its emergence as a center of boom of Renaissance. In the 17th century, the city was the great center of Baroque, while the existence of ancient Roman ruins became a magnet for artists from all over Europe (Poussin, Claude Lorrain, Pinarezi, Panini, Mengs, etc).
