(from the ancient Greek ropos = low value items): Painting of scenes from everyday life of ordinary people. Similar scenes were the first subject of Dutch and Flemish painters’ works of the 17th century. This kind of painting, which is found mainly in northern Europe, has flourished in the 18th and 19th century.
