Romanticism
A truly radical change in people’s perception for the world of that time, that began in the 18th and culminated in the 19th century. The major elements of the Romantic Spirit are: the turn towards nature, the emphasis on subjective sensitivity, the emotion and the imagination opposed to reason and interest in the past and in everything mysterious and exotic. As for visual arts, the edge of the movement coincides approximate with the half-century 1790-1840. In England, Constable’s works and Turner’s are already evident a new consciousness of the landscape, while later Samuel Palmer’s paintings (Blake’s student) reveal a deeply romantic spirit. In Germany, Schinkel’s medieval landscapes and Moritz von Svint’s and KD Friedrich’s paintings full of mystery are typical samples of romantic painting. In France finally and Spain, the romanticism came perhaps to its biggest moments with Delacroix’s, Goya’s and Géricault’s work.
