Wanderers, The
Group of Russian artists who, in 1863, "they themselves had detached" from the Imperial Academy of Arts of St. Petersburg and began to "wander" in different regions of Russia. Officially, the group was formed in 1870. As their friends-writers, Tourgueniev and Tolstoï, inspired by the idea of bringing the art close to people and were organizing exhibitions in the Russian countryside. Their works were highly instructive, by removing any kind of technical refinements and had as its subject the scenes from the villagers’ life.
