Cobra
An international and artistic team that was formed in 1948. Its name comes from the initials of the cities such as Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam, and which were the centers of its activity. Its best known members were P Alechinsky, Karel Appel and A. Jorn and its purpose was a kind of revival of Expressionism. Coordinator of the group, disbanded in 1951, was the critic, Christian Dotremont. The strong presence of insects and animals, painted in a free and abstract style, in the work of basic representatives of the group, shows their admiration for each kind of prehistoric, primitive and non-pretentious art. Cobra exhibitions were organized in 1948 in Copenhagen, in 1949 in Amsterdam and in 1951 in Liege.
