Family and School of Japanese artists which merged the Chinese painting technique by ink with the local Japanese decorative qualities. Kano Motonobu (born 1476-1559) developed the characteristic style, dominated by the bold outlines and bold design. Many remarkable works are found in the temples of Kyoto. The grandson of Kano Eitoku (1543-1590) was distinguished as a painter of princes of the period of Muromaki and had many followers. His works are characterized by sinewy style and the use of vibrant colors on a background of thin and gold foil. The grandson of Kano Eitoku Tanyu (1602-1674) revived the family tradition. Official painter of the Tokugawa government, he was distinguished as a painter and decorator of palaces and towers of Edo and Kyoto.
