Gilt
A process in which another metal is coated by a thin gold foil. Traditionally, silver was the metal which was most often gilded. Previously, as a method used the dissolution of mercury. By the 19th century, electrolysis has replaced the old technique, cheaper, safer but not always equally satisfactory results.
