Religious performance that is used as an object of worship (usually the Virgin and the Child). The term is mainly refered to the works of the Byzantine and Russian painting. The origin of the Russian icons from the Byzantine art is evident and is expressed in standard contracts in the line and the attitude of the figures. The works of artists, such as Rublyov and his students, show their artistic and the emotional range of this expressive media. In the subsequent Russian icons, the painted form is often surrounded by a halo consisting of precious metals or gems. In the Orthodox churches, the shrine is a panel covered by pictures (usually in the space between the altar and the congregation).
